Despite jumping out to a 3-0 lead and not collecting a hit through four innings, the Lincoln Northeast baseball team relied on miscues from Lincoln High to earn a 6-2 victory over the Links Monday afternoon at Sherman Field.
The Rockets (4-10) got their only hit of the game in the bottom of the fifth when Connor Solano connected on an infield RBI single. By that point, Northeast was being outhit by Lincoln High 7-1.
Still, Northeast relied on four Link errors in the first to go up 3-0.
However, Lincoln High (2-13) got a run in the top of the second, when Gavin Wagner had an RBI single to left field that scored Carson Hillhouse. The Links tried to tack on another run after that, but Caleb Herrell was thrown out at home on a throw from Northeast freshman leftfielder Cody Bruss to sophomore catcher Josh Senstock.
Lincoln High managed to pull within a run of Northeast at 3-2 in the top of the fourth, when Hillhouse doubled and later scored off an RBI single from Garrett Salisbury.
But the Rockets capitalized from there and kept the Links at bay, including an RBI groundout to second for shortstop Kirby Zinniel in the fourth inning and the two run infield hit from Solano in the sixth that scored Tyler Robertson and Erik Hite.
Right-hander Daustin Manske picked up the win for Northeast, while Jack Streckfuss suffered the loss for Lincoln High.
The Links committed five errors, but still outhit the Rockets in the game 8-1.
