10/05/2018 - FOOTBALL: Epperson Runs Wild For Skutt Over Waverly

By Jeff Motz

OMAHA----Just when you thought the weather played a roll in Omaha Skutt's ground attack, SkyHawk running back Jarod Epperson proved opposite.

The senior broke out for 16-yard and 60-yard touchdown runs in the second half, as No. 1 Skutt beat No. 4 Waverly 30-14 before a homecoming and senior night crowd at Moylan Field.

Epperson finished the game with 25 carries, 205 yards and two touchdowns,  Before that, Skutt started the game by forcing a safety, when Waverly quarterback Rhett Jordon was sacked in the end-zone on a 3rd and 8 situation.

Skutt (7-0), though, committed two turnovers.  Waverly's Carter Prang and Jared Nielsen recovered two SkyHawk fumbles.  Following Nielsen's recovery, Jordon broke out fo a 17-yard run, which set up a 52-yard touchdown pass to Jay Adams for a 7-2 Viking lead just before the end of the first quarter.  Adams had two catches in the game for 86 yards.

Much of the 2nd quarter was defense, but Skutt got a break late on two Waverly penalties for pass interference and targeting.  Three plays later, the SkyHawks took control as quarterback Ryan McCormick threw a 1-yard jump pass to Tommy Legel with 34 seconds left for a 10-7 lead.

Epperson's 16-yard touchdown run extended Skutt's lead to 17-7 in the third quarter.  Waverly (5-2) countered when Jordon found Trent Weatherwax on a 41-yard pass to the SkyHawk 32-yard line as time ran out in the third quarter.

Jordon then threw a 34-yard pass to Jay Adams for a touchdown early in the quarter that narrowed the Viking deficit to 17-14.

Skutt kept control for good on the next drive, when Epperson broke out for the 60-yard scoring run on the first play from scrimmage.  McCormick with less than a minute left scored the final SkyHawk touchdown on a quarterback keeper from three yards out.

Skutt finished with 299 yards of offense, while Waverly had 275 total yards.  Jordon threw 5 of 10 passes for 139 yards, two touchdowns and one interception for the Vikings.  He also ran 21 times for 85 yards and 224 yards of total offense.

McCormick completed 8 of 11 passes for 53 yards, while he ran 12 times for 14 yards.

Waverly running back Kaleb Canoyer was limited to 47 yards rushing, while carrying the ball 14 times.
