- CLASS A BASEBALL: Burke Escapes Late LSW Rally With Put Out At Home
By Jeff Motz
PAPILLION---Lincoln Southwest had a chance to tie and took advantage of it. However, it wasn't the end result the Silver Hawks hope for on Saturday afternoon.
Ty Regier's attempt to score with two out in the top of the 7th came down to a throw from right field and a put out at home plate, as Southwest fell 2-1 to Omaha Burke at Werner Park.
Regier led off the inning with a double to left centerfield. Then designated hitter Will Watkins had a fly out to shortstop and Cooper Samway flew out to right, before Treyton Randall hit a bloop single in shallow rightfield.
Burke rightfielder Noah Olson fired off the throw to home and catcher Nolan Opheim applied the tag as Regier slid into home, after being waved around third base.
The Bulldogs (22-4) took control 2-0 in the fourth inning when Jack Lortz reached on a hit by pitch, then stole second base and scored on an RBI triple from Nick Hall. Tyler Cate reached on a fielder's choice and drove in Hall for the second run.
Southwest (23-7) got a boost in the top of the fifth, when Watkins led off with a double and advanced on a single from Randall. A sacrifice bunt from Cade Moeller scored Watkins.
Burke went with ace pitcher Hunter Waugh, who threw seven complete innings, allowing just the one run on six hits while collecting eight strikeouts. He improved to 9-0 on the season.
Southwest's top hurler, Dawson Linder, threw four innings, allowed two runs and two hits, while striking out four Burke batters, while hitting two and walking another two.
Burke now plays Omaha Creighton Prep in the winner's bracket Monday at 4pm.
Southwest will face Lincoln Southeast, who lost to Prep 10-5 in the tournament opener on Saturday. The Silver Hawks and Knights play Monday at 10am at Werner Park.
